Kilometres for the Coast

Run Against Plastic Benefit Fundraiser in honour of Andy Sward
In support of Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada

Kilometres for the Coast is a not-for-profit campaign raising money and spreading awareness for Plastic Oceans Canada.

We are holding a Cross-Canada Run Challenge in honour of Andy Sward! We are seeking 800+ Canadian individuals or teams to run/walk 10 km each and clean the roadside.

Learn more about Andy and what he does here

We are recruiting 800 runners (or teams of runners) to complete a 10 km route anywhere in Canada, picking up litter as you go!

Runners create a GoFundMe page in anticipation of your 10 km clean-up run or walk. Direct your family and friends to your GoFundMe page to support your run for Canada’s coast or encourage them to sign up and fundraise for themselves!

All runs will take place on, or leading up to,
International Coastal Cleanup Day – Saturday, September 19th 2020

Start your GoFundMe profiles early! The deadline to complete your 10 km run and finish fundraising is Saturday, September 19th 2020.

What You’re Supporting

100% of proceeds support Plastic Ocean Foundation Canada – Remote and Uninhabited shoreline clean-up with Circular Economy solutions.

Remote shorelines are hard to reach and act as primary catchments of waste plastics. Meanwhile, Canada has the largest coastline in the world at 243,042 km.

Plastic Oceans Canada’s focus is twofold:
1 – Deploy to normally inaccessible coastlines and uninhabited islands.
2 – Employ circular economy solutions to financially offset the demand on this becoming a solely donor funded program.

Learn more about their remote and uninhabited shoreline cleanup project here.

Plastic Oceans aims to utilize the fuel derived from end-of-life plastics to power the vehicles required for further expeditions across Canada cleaning our shorelines.

What Inspired Us

COVID-19 is first and foremost a public health crisis. One of our responses to this crisis is the mass-production of personal protection equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks. Protecting ourselves, others, and the workers at the front lines is, and should be, the top priority.

But sadly, many of these single-use items, sanitizing wipes, and restaurant take-out packages are not being disposed of correctly and are littered on our streets. Ironically, our response to one global public health crisis is contributing to another…

Kilometres for the Coast combines our passions for running and inciting environmental change into a unique opportunity for all Canadians to get involved. We want to bring people together in support of a joint cause while staying apart. We want to increase awareness around the plastic pollution problem.

Our goal is to encourage Canadians to rack-up the kilometres while also improving the health of Canada’s oceans.
